Ancient beliefs, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aliran kepercayaan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are traditional beliefs outside the six government-recognised religions. In a country where religion plays a large part in public life, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aliran kepercayaan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> devotees may still feel ostracised.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>In the news<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rising intolerance against religious and sexual minorities have raised concerns about the growing influence of more conservative forms of Islam in Indonesia. With crippling conditions and rising number of reports of depression, the desperation is palpable. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/apr\/15\/on-the-streets-with-the-desperate-refugees-who-dream-of-being-detained?CMP=soc_568\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian reports the story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the streets outside the Kalideres detention centre.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indonesian state universities are welcoming the latest policy of President Joko Widodo&#8217;s administration allowing <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/news\/2018\/04\/16\/state-universities-welcome-foreigners-as-permanent-lecturers.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foreign academics to serve as permanent lecturers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country&#8217;s universities. The move is an attempt to increase the country\u2019s quality of higher education and meet international standards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The global success of Satudarah, an outlaw motorcycle gang with roots in the Netherlands&#8217; Indonesian community, speaks to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmandala.org\/indonesias-desperate-diaspora\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ongoing socio-economic marginalisation of Indonesian and other diaspora communities in the west<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-tech startup success stories shouldn\u2019t hide that the Indonesian economy and population are relying primarily on micro and small businesses that are low-tech and low-growth.
