Whilst Prabowo Subianto, the 2014 runner-up, has accepted his party\u2019s endorsement, it is unclear whether he can assemble a viable coalition as the August deadline looms. However, the potential lack of a challenger raises serious questions about the health of Indonesia\u2019s democracy. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>In the news<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty years ago, the Soeharto era ended with reformation. Tim Lindsey shares his concern on the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalaffairs.org.au\/australianoutlook\/post-reformasi-indonesia-the-age-of-uncertainty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uncertainty that dominates domestic Indonesian politics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in this post-reformasi period and its likely impact on Indonesian foreign relationships. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent research has revealed Indonesia\u2019s enormous capacity to store electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind through pumped hydro energy storage (PHES). Most excitingly, the research suggests Indonesia has more than enough PHES sites to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/indonesia-has-far-more-than-enough-pumped-hydro-storage-sites-to-support-a-100-renewable-electricity-grid-94635\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support a 100% renewable energy grid. <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lowy Institute has recently published its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/power.lowyinstitute.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 Asian Power Index<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It reports that Indonesia\u2019s economy is projected to overtake Japan\u2019s and Russia\u2019s by 2030. Head to their interactive website to analyse power distributions in the region. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amidst the political and economic turmoil that lead to Soeharto\u2019s demise in 1998, it was the property and businesses of ethnic Chinese Indonesian who were most frequently targeted by rioters. Jemma Purdey <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/indonesiaatmelbourne.unimelb.edu.au\/could-violence-against-the-ethnic-chinese-in-indonesia-happen-again\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assesses the likelihood such violence will reappear in Indonesia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially leading up to the 2019 presidential election. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indonesia\u2019s higher education is falling behind in global rankings and remains highly concentrated within Java. These issues need to be tackled hand-in-hand if Indonesia wishes to properly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiasentinel.com\/society\/indonesia-unequal-higher-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reform its higher education system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australian Ambassador to Indonesia from 1997-2000 John McCarthy reflects on 20 years of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/indonesiaatmelbourne.unimelb.edu.au\/reflections-on-20-years-of-reform-former-australian-ambassador-john-mccarthy-ao\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reform following Soeharto\u2019s resignation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jakarta Airport\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-06-11\/jakarta-airport-new-terminal-centrepiece-of-transport-plan\/7501584\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new T3 terminal is almost due for completion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is the centrepiece of the government\u2019s plan to transform the capital into a transport hub to rival Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The founder of ACICIS, David Hill is retiring in July.
