Now, it seems the Sultan is manoeuvring to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-43806210\">make his eldest daughter his heir<\/a>, representing a breakaway from long-standing tradition and sparking feuds amongst members of the royal court.<\/p>\n<h2>In the news<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Indonesia has long been criticised for the severe mistreatment of its easternmost provinces of Papua and West Papua. Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/03\/world\/asia\/indonesia-papua-independence-human-rights.html\">simmering independence efforts in Papua<\/a>, human rights groups continue to report high levels of conflict between pro-independence groups and the Indonesian state.<\/li>\n<li>Lax smoking laws make <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/disneyland-for-big-tobacco-how-indonesias-lax-smoking-laws-are-helping-next-generation-to-get-hooked-97489\">Indonesia a disneyland for Big Tobacco<\/a>. With tobacco companies continuing to influence and target Indonesian youth, it seeks to threaten the country\u2019s potential and future productivity.<\/li>\n<li>On Tuesday, the Indonesian Corrections office confirmed that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-06-05\/bali-nine-member-tan-duc-thanh-nguyen-dies-in-hospital\/9837854\">Bali Nine member Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen had passed away<\/a> in hospital. He is the third member of the group to die after Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, who were executed in 2015.<\/li>\n<li>Last Thursday, Jokowi met with participants of Indonesia\u2019s longest running human rights project, Kamisan (\u201cThursdays\u201d) for the first time. Rather than signal a change of heart toward Kamisan\u2019s appeals for justice, Ken Setiawan writes Jokowi\u2019s meeting merely gave an <a href=\"http:\/\/indonesiaatmelbourne.unimelb.edu.au\/jokowi-not-fooling-anyone-with-latest-nod-to-rights-victims\/\">artificial impression of interest in Indonesia&#8217;s human rights agenda.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The level of involvement of IS leaders in coordinating the recent string of terrorist attacks across Indonesia still remains unclear. Meanwhile, it has also raised questions about whether <a href=\"http:\/\/indonesiaatmelbourne.unimelb.edu.au\/the-may-attacks-is-indonesia-facing-a-new-form-of-terrorism\/\">Indonesia is facing a new brand of terrorism.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>India and Indonesia have signed an agreement for closer military ties. Whilst it was not specifically mentioned, it is suggested the deal was driven by the two countries\u2019 desire to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-06-01\/india-and-indonesia-strengthen-their-military-alliance\/9823720?utm_source=AIC+Media+Update&#038;utm_campaign=855bae8da4-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_01_05_06&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_term=0_1639681d6e-855bae8da4-459043661\">push back against China\u2019s military expansion<\/a> in the South China Sea.<\/li>\n<li>Australian Consulate-General to Bali alongside Trash Hero Kertalangu and Eco-Bali Recycling <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempo.co\/read\/news\/2018\/06\/02\/199918924\/Australian-Consulate-General-Holds-Cleanup-Movement-in-Bali-Beach?utm_source=AIC+Media+Update&#038;utm_campaign=7125b1c61f-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_06_03_26&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_term=0_1639681d6e-7125b1c61f-459043661\">held a cleanup movement in Biaung Beach<\/a>, East Denpasar last Saturday. Joined by 100 volunteers, the cleanup was the first activity of \u201cWaste to Wealth\u201d, a week-long program promoting eco-friendly tourism in Bali and Nusa Tenggara.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>On the blog<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Many parents consider that raising their children to speak more than one language will give their offspring an edge over monolingual kids. To compete in a globalised world, future generations are required to master at least two languages.
