{"id":17426,"date":"2020-04-09T11:48:08","date_gmt":"2020-04-09T01:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.aiya.org.au\/?p=17426"},"modified":"2021-07-10T11:37:35","modified_gmt":"2021-07-10T01:37:35","slug":"possible-coronavirus-drug-identified-by-monash-university-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aiya.org.au\/id\/2020\/04\/09\/possible-coronavirus-drug-identified-by-monash-university-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"Possible Coronavirus Drug Identified by Monash University Scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aiya.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-17427 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/34.101.188.30\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image-300x189.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"506\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Original post by Monash University<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A Monash University-led study has shown that an anti-parasitic drug already available around the world can kill the virus within 48 hours.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Scientists showed that a single dose of the drug, Ivermectin, could stop the SARS-CoV-2 virus growing in cell culture.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The next steps are to determine the correct human dosage \u2013 ensuring the doses shown to effectively treat the virus in vitro are safe levels for humans.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The use of Ivermectin to combat COVID-19 depends on pre-clinical testing and clinical trials, with funding urgently required to progress the work.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Melbourne, 4 April 2020 &#8211; A collaborative study led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/discovery-institute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/discovery-institute&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1586482996269000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFzff6PzZJQL1NiDga9xY6GTwLhrA\">Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI)<\/a> with the Peter Doherty Institute of Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute), a joint venture of the University of Melbourne and Royal Melbourne Hospital, has shown that an anti-parasitic drug already available around the world kills the virus within 48 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/discovery-institute\/wagstaff-lab\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/discovery-institute\/wagstaff-lab\/home&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1586482996269000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHphruIuRlb9Y5nnWSIDNA1mxiFNg\">Dr Kylie Wagstaff<\/a>, who led the study, said the scientists showed that the drug, Ivermectin, stopped the SARS-CoV-2 virus growing in cell culture within 48 hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours there was a really significant reduction in it,\u201d Dr Wagstaff said.<\/p>\n<p>Ivermectin is an FDA-approved anti-parasitic drug that has also been shown to be effective in vitro against a broad range of viruses including HIV, Dengue, Influenza and Zika virus.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dr Wagstaff cautioned that the tests conducted in the study were in vitro and that trials needed to be carried out in people.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIvermectin is very widely used and seen as a safe drug. We need to figure out now whether the dosage you can use it at in humans will be effective \u2013 that\u2019s the next step,\u201d Dr Wagstaff said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn times when we\u2019re having a global pandemic and there isn\u2019t an approved treatment, if we had a compound that was already available around the world then that might help people sooner. Realistically it\u2019s going to be a while before a vaccine is broadly available.<\/p>\n<p>Although the mechanism by which Ivermectin works on the virus is not known, it is likely, based on its action in other viruses, that it works to stop the virus \u2018dampening down\u2019 the host cells\u2019 ability to clear it, Dr Wagstaff said.<\/p>\n<p>Royal Melbourne Hospital\u2019s Dr Leon Caly, a Senior Medical Scientist at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) at the Doherty Institute where the experiments with live coronavirus were conducted, is the study\u2019s first author.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the virologist who was part of the team who were first to isolate and share SARS-COV2 outside of China in January 2020, I am excited about the prospect of Ivermectin being used as a potential drug against COVID-19,\u201d\u00a0 Dr Caly said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Wagstaff made a previous breakthrough finding on Ivermectin in 2012 when she identified the drug and its antiviral activity with Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/discovery-institute\/jans-lab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/discovery-institute\/jans-lab&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1586482996269000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEKgSPHfGMOEM7Cg6pNZRwmznl-zA\">Professor David Jans<\/a>, also an author on this paper.
