The Australia Network&#8217;s Jakarta correspondent Helen Brown (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/hbrown10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@hbrown10<\/a>) reports that the Minister for Law and Human Rights, Amir Syamsuddin, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2013-07-18\/indonesia-to-change-visa-requirements-for-iranians\/4829434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has announced that Iranian citizens will no longer be able to access Indonesia&#8217;s Visa-on-Arrival service<\/a>, which the Australian Government saw as facilitating the use of Indonesia as a transit point for asylum seekers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Good news for Australian beef producers and Indonesian shoppers\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.beefcentral.com\/news\/agribusiness\/article\/3421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indonesia has signalled that it urgently wants to import 25,000 head of cattle to bring down the skyrocketing price of beef<\/a>, of which there has been a shortage in recent months.<\/li>\n<li>Australian wheat growers will also be pleased by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/07\/17\/indonesia-wheat-idUSL4N0FM0JA20130717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this Reuters report, which explains how many Indonesians are incorporating more wheat-based foods in their diet<\/a>\u2014either through eating more Western foods, or replacing (increasingly costly) rice with mass-produced wheat noodles.<\/li>\n<li>SBS correspondent Rhiannon Elston highlights how Indonesia struggles to respond effectively to drug addiction despite recent reforms to legislation, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/article\/1788428\/Inside-Indonesias-drug-prisons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with harsh laws leading to overcrowded prisons in which drug use and the spread of HIV remains common<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Bloomberg reports on efforts to boost the number of women holding political office in Indonesia. Though there are signs of progress as some parties endorse gender quotas, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-07-16\/indonesia-penalizes-parties-in-fight-for-women-southeast-asia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it&#8217;s clear that there&#8217;s a long way to go before female representation in politics is up to scratch.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>File this one under &#8216;boom watch&#8217;: the Hilton hotels group wants to cash in on the growth of Indonesia&#8217;s consumer class by significantly expanding its business in the country, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/searealtime\/2013\/07\/18\/hilton-targets-indonesia-travel-boom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to this report in the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Human Rights Watch has criticised Indonesia&#8217;s Law on Mass Organisations, saying that the legislation\u2014recently passed by the national parliament\u2014could\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2013\/07\/17\/indonesia-amend-law-mass-organizations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;infringe upon the rights to freedom of association, expression, and religion, and provide the government wide latitude to obstruct NGO work&#8217;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>In other news&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>If you ever owned a Datsun&#8230;well, you <em>might<\/em> be a bit old for the Australia-Indonesia <em>Youth<\/em> Association. But we can all share in some nostalgia as Nissan will soon relaunch the brand in Indonesia and other developing markets, <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424127887323848804578607161694002762.html?KEYWORDS=indonesia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">catering to new middle class motorists with the super-cheap Datsun Go<\/a>. A sign of increasing prosperity, for sure, but one wonders how Indonesia&#8217;s already traffic-choked cities will cope as car ownership becomes increasingly affordable.<\/li>\n<li>Thanks to an AIYA Facebook friend who introduced us to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Indonesia-Tempo-Dulu\/247931668557102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indonesia Tempo Dulu<\/a>, a Facebook page which regularly sources and shares lovely old photographs and postcards from Indonesia and the Dutch East Indies. Have a look!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Events<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">The unconventional, challenging and <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 13px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.insideindonesia.org\/feature-editions\/review-an-act-of-manipulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slightly controversial<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\"> documentary\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"line-height: 13px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theactofkilling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Act of Killing<\/a>\u2014<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">which explores the legacy of the 1965-66 political massacres in Indonesia\u2014premiered in the United States this week, getting good press in the\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"line-height: 13px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2013\/jul\/18\/indonesias-happy-killers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Review of Books<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">and the\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"line-height: 13px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424127887323848804578610091596141774.html?KEYWORDS=indonesia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>amongst other places.<span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">\u00a0After having its Australian premiere at the Sydney International Film Festival last month, <a href=\"http:\/\/tix.miff.com.au\/session2_miff.asp?sn=THE+ACT+OF+KILLING&amp;s=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it will be screened at the\u00a0Melbourne\u00a0International Film Festival on 28 July and 3 August.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Applications to be part of the inaugural\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.causindy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conference of Australian and Indonesian Youth (CAUSINDY)<\/a>\u00a0in Canberra on 17-20 October are still open.
