From squalid prison wards crowded with petty criminals to the luxury cells bought by corrupt businessmen, the profound problems of Indonesia&#8217;s prison system are rarely out of the media there. As usual,\u00a0<em>II\u00a0<\/em>has put together <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insideindonesia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a terrific collection of articles exploring the topic.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Also at\u00a0<em>Inside Indonesia,\u00a0<\/em>the US political scientist Michael Beuhler reports on his research about one of the uglier aspects of Indonesia&#8217;s democracy: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insideindonesia.org\/feature-editions\/married-with-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the rise of predatory family dynasties in local politics.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Events<\/h2>\n<p>There are some unmissable events for Indonesia enthusiasts coming up soon:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\"><strong>Melbourne<\/strong>: on 1 August at 6:00pm, Monash University&#8217;s Prof. Greg Barton will speak at the Australian Institute of International Affairs on the topic of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aiia.asn.au\/events\/all-events\/event\/741-indonesia-after-sby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Indonesia After SBY&#8217;.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Canberra<\/strong>: beginning 1 August, the National Film and Sound Archive will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfsa.gov.au\/calendar\/event\/4614-the-act-of-killing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showing the acclaimed and controversial documentary\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfsa.gov.au\/calendar\/event\/4614-the-act-of-killing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Act of Killing<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>and will host a post-film discussion panel with\u00a0noted Indonesia experts, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfsa.gov.au\/calendar\/event\/4626-confronting-act-killing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Confronting the Act of Killing&#8217;, after a 2pm screening on Saturday 3 August.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The Centre for Dialogue at La Trobe University is currently looking for young, up-and-coming leaders from Muslim communities in Australia and Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and The Philippines) to participate in this year&#8217;s Muslim Leadership Program in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/dialogue\/research\/projects\/muslim-leadership-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deadline for applications for the month-long course (Oct 6 &#8211; Nov 3) is August 31.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Applications to be part of the inaugural\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.causindy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conference of Australian and Indonesian Youth (CAUSINDY)<\/a>\u00a0in Canberra on 17-20 October are still open.
