Paul Ramadge from Monash\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/comment\/university-tieup-a-leap-forward-in-indonesia-20131001-2uqo1.html#ixzz2gXY6Vhmx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains the importance of the new institution<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Bernard Lane (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/bernard_lane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Bernard_Lane<\/a>) from\u00a0<em>The Australian\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/news\/features\/chance-to-gain-wisdom-on-asia\/story-e6frg6z6-1226732537081#mm-premium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has a great piece today<\/a> looking at how the initiatives announced in Jakarta might help build Indonesia expertise in Australia.<\/li>\n<li>The PM&#8217;s remarks at a business breakfast on Tuesday are well worth a read\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pm.gov.au\/media\/2013-10-01\/building-indonesia-australia-relationship-21st-century\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he spoke quite frankly about how the balance of economic clout is shifting in Indonesia&#8217;s favour, and how Australia needs to respond<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Indonesian reporters were denied access to the event, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartaglobe.com\/news\/abbotts-local-press-event-shuts-out-local-reporters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">angering the Alliance of Independent Journalists (Aliansi Jurnalis Independen; AJI)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Lowy&#8217;s Dave McRae (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/_davemcrae_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@_DaveMcRae_<\/a>) took a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lowyinterpreter.org\/post\/2013\/10\/02\/How-Indonesias-print-media-saw-the-Abbott-visit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how the Indonesian-language print media saw the visit<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>We got a good run in the international media, too: today&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/asia\/21587263-trying-move-relations-beyond-old-bugbears-boats-cows-and-grass?zid=306&amp;ah=1b164dbd43b0cb27ba0d4c3b12a5e227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Economist <\/em>highlights how Australia is trying to shift the relationship&#8217;s focus to economic matters<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Now the bad news: enrolments in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/education\/number-of-hsc-language-students-falls-to-record-low-20131002-2usv2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HSC<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/federal-politics\/political-news\/indonesian-slips-as-favoured-subject-20131003-2uxgb.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VCE<\/a> Indonesian courses are still on the decline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>In the news<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Leading the news in Indonesia: the chief justice of the Constitutional Court, Akil Mochtar, has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartaglobe.com\/news\/kpk-charges-constitutional-court-chief-justice-in-bribery-scandal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested and charged by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) with accepting bribes from a party in an electoral dispute<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The court&#8217;s former chief justice Jimly Asshidique has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/news\/2013\/10\/03\/samad-backs-death-sentence-mk-chief-justice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called for the death penalty if the case is proven, and KPK chief Abraham Samad agrees<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Chinese President Xi Jinping\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/news\/2013\/10\/03\/china-ri-take-ties-new-level.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this week visited Jakarta<\/a>, where he became the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-24361172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first foreign leader to address the Indonesian\u00a0parliament<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The World Bank will launch its Indonesia Economic Quarterly today, which should appear <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/all?count_exact=Indonesia&amp;qterm=&amp;lang_exact=English\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> this afternoon (Australian time).<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<em>Financial Times&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>Ben Bland (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/benjaminbland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@benjaminbland<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/b88add68-2b34-11e3-a1b7-00144feab7de.html?siteedition=intl#axzz2gWDqvMzG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports on the state of Indonesia&#8217;s foreign policy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Reuters reports that Bank Indonesia <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/10\/03\/us-indonesia-economy-idUSBRE99211620131003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;has few options left to defend the Rupiah if Asia&#8217;s worst-performing currency comes under fresh attack&#8217;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Also from Reuters, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/10\/01\/us-indonesia-coal-idUSBRE9901BN20131001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Indonesia&#8217;s $5 billion of lost coal&#8217;
