• With the Free Trade Agreement between Indonesia and Australia subject to delays, it seems Australian graziers, grain growers and citrus orchadists are among the biggest losers.
• While Jokowi believes Indonesians should be able to produce as much rice, corn and soy as the country needs, the government’s recent decision to import 100,000 tons of corn for animal feed through the end of 2018 suggests the goal of food sovereignty continues to be a work in progress.
• Melanie Filler and Tim Barretto are Sydney-based documentary filmmakers who just returned from the tsunami and earthquake devastated region of Central Sulawesi. Recently published, their photo essay hopes to showcase hope in the face of disaster.

• Indonesian millennials are the largest voting bloc in the country’s presidential election and yet they are the generation most profoundly disenchanted with the political establishment. Issues of corruption and money politics appear central to this growing political apathy.
• Recently, a diverse group of individuals all focused on improving the mental health of Indonesia’s young people came together in Jakarta. The accomplished roundtable generated many exciting opportunities for stronger mental health advocacy and awareness in Indonesia.
• Cave paintings recently discovered in remote mountains in Borneo have been dated to at least 40,000 years ago, much earlier than first thought. This discovery adds to the mounting view that the first cave art traditions did not arise in Europe, as long believed.

• More than ever, Indonesia’s youth are playing a key role in the country’s politics. This week, the Talking Indonesia podcast chats with Rian Ernest (31), a first time candidate for Partai Solidaritas Indonesia in the 2019 legislative elections. • On Monday morning, a Lion Air Flight 610 plunged into the Java Sea with 189 people on board. No survivors were found. The exact sequence of events that led to yet another aviation disaster in Indonesia is still unclear, and may emerge only once flight-data recorders are recovered from the waters northeast of Jakarta.
• Former PM Malcolm Turnbull has warned the Government relocating Australia’s embassy in Israel would be met with “a very negative reaction” in Indonesia, following talks with President Jokowi.
• In recent decades, income inequality has been increasing in Indonesia, leading to growing worries about disparities in living standards and education. However recently, Indonesia has invested huge amounts in education and implemented several progressive policies designed to promote mobility. Senza Arsendy assesses whether this investment is finally paying off.
• The known e-commerce platform Bukalapak in collaboration with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) launched Indonesia’s inaugural artificial intelligence (AI) research center aimed to give birth to the country’s AI engineering in the future.

• Indonesia has warned that Australia’s shock decision to consider following US President Donald Trump’s Middle East policy threatens global stability, as the Morrison government braces for a diplomatic backlash that could hit lucrative international trade.
• With many Indonesian farmers fighting plummeting prices and animosity from banking institutions, one farmer decided to help others struggling financially by establishing CROWDE, a mobile crowdfunding platform that allows users to invest as little as $1 in thousands of farms across Indonesia.
• According to Euromonitor International, Jakarta is expected to succeed Tokyo as the world’s most populous city by 2030.
• Melbourne is set to get a coworking hub focused on helping residents expand into Indonesia. Named “The 11^th”, the space aims to act as a “gateway” between key markets across the Asia Pacific, helping entrepreneurs connect to mentors, networks, investors, and support systems overseas.

• Jakarta, TONIGHT – A ReelOzInd screening will be held at Atma Jaya University at 3:30pm in the K2 Multimedia Room! Ryan Sebastian, the winner of the ‘Best Young Filmmaker’ category will be at the event to talk about his film ‘Unbalanced Corner, Unfinished Book’.
