We Did It!!!

On Saturday the 15^th of September, we rose at the crack of dawn, gloves and bags in hand, ready to clean up the streets of Bandung. As just one location across 155 countries, we had the privilege of being just a few in 13 plus million volunteers contributing to a cleaner, waste-free world. Inspired by more humble beginnings, this day provides ordinary people with the opportunity to achieve something truly extraordinary. Not only that, but World Cleanup Day, gives communities the opportunity to come together, despite differences in race, occupation, background and hobbies and work towards a common goal.

As we walked the streets of Bandung you could sense the vibrancy of the community. There were Warung owners helping us pick up rubbish as we walked pass their stall and children loving the opportunity to help their parents and get involved. It was wonderful to see so many people uniting in one location passionate and excited about two hours of doing our bit for the environment. Just in our group alone, there were 5 different nations represented, just showing the how something as simple as picking up rubbish has the ability to unite people from all over the globe.

The overwhelming consensus on the day was that it was great to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and contribute to a cleaner planet. World Cleanup day has definitely been written into our 2019 Calendar, no matter what part of the world we find ourselves next year.

Dessert queen and lover of all things sweet, Jess Liemantara was the youngest contestant on this years MasterChef Australia. This week, Jess shares about her MasterChef Journey and the power of connecting people through food!

Tell us a little about your background. How did you come to apply for MasterChef?

I was born in Perth Subiaco along with my older brother Jeremy, then we moved down to Melbourne. Both my parents are from Surabaya hence why I speak mostly Bahasa Jawa. My parents opened a restaurant in Perth called, “Taste of Java”, and later reopened another restaurant in Melbourne called, “Foodtopia Fusion Café Restaurant”, in Bayswater which was a fusion of Thai, Malay and Indonesian cuisine. My brother and I both helped my parents in the restaurant, I managed floor operations, till management and barista ring and my brother worked as the chef along with my dad. My mum took on the role as the Boss and inspired my bother and I to purse being entrepreneurs ourselves.

We opened the restaurant for 4 years and decided we all needed to move on to venture new opportunities and skills. I started working at Nobu as a food and beverage attendant in July 2017 and was amazed by the authentic Japanese cuisine and the way the chefs work in the kitchen. Being on the other side as a waitress is much different the level of intensity, and is not as stressful as being the kitchen. The chefs work extremely hard to make sure food is consistent and of high quality.

The opportunity to audition for MasterChef 2018 came along and friends and family pushed me to audition for the show. I didn’t feel fit enough for the opportunity just after not going further in my recent audition for the Great Australian Bake Off. After many nagging and support from family and friends I decided to give it ago. I handed in my application and after a month received an email requesting to schedule in an audition. From then on I was short listed to the top 50 contestants to cook for the three judges. To this day I still cannot believe the amazing journey that got me to that very special day.

What’s life like post-MasterChef?

Gosh I would have to say I had a couple of tough months where I felt out of place and didn’t know where to begin just after being away for so long. Having quit my previous job as a waitress, I wanted to pursue my passion as a chef. I searched for work experience and was lucky enough to do be able to undertake professional experience at the Press club and Omnom. The amount of technique, skill and precision in these two businesses are phenomenal, it was such an amazing experience.

I’m currently working at Omnom sometimes it still surprises me that I am now on the other side of the business having people say “yes Chef”, makes me feel like I’ve achieved that one step closer to a new beginning. I’ve always dreamed of being in the kitchen baking and doing what I love most. But it’s not always funs and daisies, there will be tough days in the kitchen but I am willing to learn and get back up when things don’t go to plan.

Working casually along with taking custom cake orders I’ve realised how much time and energy cooking takes out of you. There are days when I just want to sit and relax but all you can think about is what I have to do next, what needs to be prepared and what if it doesn’t work or I don’t have enough time. There are no regrets, I still love what I do and will continue to pursue my dream of one day supplying my cakes to businesses. Taking it slow and as George said, “don’t climb the mountain to high to come down crumbling”. I am hoping to finish off my cookbook by December 2018.

Can you tell us a bit about your time on MasterChef? What was your favourite thing about the experience?

My MasterChef journey was one of the hardest things I’ve done. The audition process to get to top 50 was so much fun, scary, but so fun. Cooking for the judges for the first time was even more stressful. After not receiving an apron on the first day I was devastated and didn’t have a lot of faith that I would get in on my second chance cook. The opportunity to cook for the second time was such a blessing I got to show the judges I really do want to fight to the very end. Finally, receiving the apron on the second day was such a life changing experience, until I was in an elimination that week.

It tore me to pieces to think being the youngest in this year’s MasterChef that I was in the very first elimination. I have to fight a little harder to catch up to such amazing cooks. Day after day I’ve learnt so much about cooking and about life. The other MasterChef contestants are amazing and made the journey so fun and memorable.

My favourite thing about my MasterChef experience would be having the opportunity to be in 12 eliminations, 5 pressure tests and 7 normal eliminations. I was able to cook over 50 times, really helping me create my menu and find my style of cooking.

The friendships made with the caring and like-minded souls that love food as much as I do is so surreal. We non-stop talk about food. I can never forget the amazing mentoring from the 3 judges, Matt, Gary and George who continuously work hard to make me a better chef and a cleaner one too. I am so glad to have been in MasterChef 2018, the challenges and the professional chefs we met is just mind blowing I cannot thank the Lord enough for guiding me through this amazing journey.

How does your/your parents Indonesian background influence or inspire your cooking?

My parents Indonesian background helped so much in times of desperate cooking situations. From marinating with simple ingredients, peanut base sauces and our love for chilli. My dad and Grandma love making Roti isih and I am so glad I was able to make Deep fried sandwich to represent my Indonesian background. As Indonesians, we cook a lot of Thai food due to our past experiences of opening up a restaurant. Watching my dad cook inside the kitchen using just simple ingredients such as mint, lime, chilli, garlic, ginger and other aromats to make beautiful salads and dressing is what got me through my MasterChef journey. My Mum always said to marinate any protein in ginger, lemon and garlic and that’s what helped to get me through.

What are your future culinary hopes/aspirations?

I hope to have my own café one day with a production kitchen and degustation lounge. I’m also hoping to publish my cookbook by December and to hopefully get my brand out there in supplying cafes with the desserts I create. There is not one day where I don’t think about cooking or owning my own café, or even getting my desserts tasted by the public. As they say, the way to success is to dream big and continuously talk your dreams to make them happen.

What do you love most about Indonesia?

I love how fast businesses grow in Indonesia and the creativity and art put into making a restaurant or attraction so beautiful. I always wonder how fast things pop up, from big new luxurious shopping centres to the never ending beautiful restaurants and cafes that are now booming in Indonesia. Oh and it’s also the best place to shop, I love Mangga 2, Galaxy Mall, Grand Indonesia and Ciputra World.

Any hopes for the Australia-Indonesia relationship/how people can become connected through food?

With such growth in the presence of Indonesian culture here in Melbourne, I’m sure we all meet in the same places whether it is for Ayam penyet, Soto ayam or Bakso, you are bound to see another Indonesian. I think there is such a diversity here in Australia and it’s so great to see so many cuisines and different cultures uniting people food that really brings us all together and grows friendships through sitting down and eating together in your favourite restaurant.

It has been quite a remarkable week for the Australia-Indonesia relationship. Both governments are showing signed of strengthening their collaborations and we finally saw a big win for the future of business ties.

The Indonesia Australia Business Forum held at the Raffles Hotel, Jakarta on Saturday 1 September 2018 featured some very special guests including Vice President of Indonesia, Dr. H. Jusuf Kalla and the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Scott Morrison MP. The forum formally announced that negotiations for the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) had concluded. This announcement leaves the documents to undergo a legal process to ensure internal consistency, translation into Indonesian followed by an official signing and ratification by the end of the year.

Morrison made the trip to Jakarta just six days after being sworn in as Prime Minister which had been in the works for several months for former Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull. The Commonwealth Government made a decision not to cancel the trip citing that Morrison’s commitment to travel to Indonesia shows how important the bilateral relationship is and just how close both countries are.

Selama berpuluh-puluh tahun, Indonesia menggunakan sistem transaksi pembayaran non-tunai milik asing seperti Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Unionpay, American Express, dan sebagainya. Namun, tahukah Anda bahwa pemerintah Indonesia telah menerapkan sistem transaksi pembayaran non-tunai yaitu Gerbang Pembayaran Nasional (GPN) yang sama dengan perusahaan-perusahan asing tersebut?

Namun, apakah GPN ini akan merugikan atau malah menguntungkan nasabah? Yuk mari kita simak dan pelajari lebih lengkap seputar GPN di bawah ini!

Apa sih Gerbang Pembayaran Nasional (GPN) itu?

Gerbang Pembayaran Nasional atau singkatnya disebut dengan GPN adalah sistem transaksi non-tunai yang dibuat seaman dan seefisien mungkin untuk menghubungkan berbagai jalur pembayaran secara nasional dan dapat digunakan seluruh masyarakat Indonesia. Bank Indonesia beserta berbagai bank di Indonesia menghadirkan kartu debit dengan logo nasional yaitu gambar burung garuda yang dilengkapi dengan teknologi chip (National Indonesian Chip Card Specification/NISCCS) untuk melindungi data konsumen dan transaksi keuangan nasabah di seluruh Indonesia tanpa melewati jaringan luar negeri lagi. Jadi, jika dulu membayar dengan kartu debit harus menggunakan mesin EDC (Electronic Data Capture) dari bank yang menerbitkan kartu debit tersebut, nah sekarang dengan GPN ini kartu debit dari bank manapun dapat digesekkan pada semua mesin EDC.

Apa aja sih yang melatarbelakangi diberlakukannya GPN?

Berdasarkan data dari Bank Indonesia, jumlah kartu debit yang beredar di Indonesia telah menembus 160 juta dan lebih dari 80% berlogo Visa atau Mastercard. Selain itu, ada sekitar 10 ribu transaksi baik melalui ATM maupun mesin EDC yang harus masuk ke sistem transaksi luar negeri apabila menggunakan Visa atau Mastercard dan itupun ada tarif yang harus dibayar.

Pemerintah Indonesia melalui Bank Indonesia tidak ingin selamanya pendapatan dari transaksi elektronik di Indonesia mengalir deras ke perusahaan Visa atau Mastercard yang berada di negeri Paman Sam sehingga pemerintah mencoba untuk mengalihkan keuntungan yang sebelumnya ke luar negeri menjadi potensi pendapatan untuk perusahaan nasional. Konon sistem lalu lintas pembayaran ini telah diprakarsai sejak 20 tahun lalu tetapi karena berbagai hal salah satunya teknologi sehingga GPN baru dapat terealisasi pada akhir tahun 2017 dan mulai berlaku sejak 1 Januari 2018.

Apa aja sih tujuan yang ingin dicapai dari terbentuknya GPN ini?

• Membangun sistem pembayaran yang saling terhubung, interoperabilitas (saling dapat dioperasikan) dan mampu memproses transaksi di
  

  dalam negeri yang mencakup otorisasi, kliring dan settlement secara aman, optimal, dan efisien.

• Menjamin perlindungan konsumen melalui teknologi chip yang akan mengamankan data nasabah setiap bertransaksi elektronik.
• Merealisasikan kedaulatan sistem pembayaran elektronik di dalam negeri dan merealisasikan keuangan inklusif dan pengembangan sistem perdagangan nasional yang berbasis teknologi yang diatur dalam Perpres No.74 tahun 2017 tentang roadmap e-commerce.
• Berperan sebagai sistem pendukung (backbone) strategis untuk program pemerintah baik Government to Person (G2P) seperti penyaluran bantuan sosial atau subsidi secara non-tunai, dan Person to Government (P2G) seperti program elektronifikasi transportasi publik dan jalan tol untuk mendorong Gerakan Nasional Non Tunai (GNNT).

Bagaimana cara mendapatkan kartu berlogo GPN?

Apabila Anda ingin mengganti kartu debit Anda yang menggunakan logo Visa, Mastercard, JCB dan lainnya. Anda cukup datang ke cabang terdekat bank yang Anda gunakan dan mengajukan penggantian kartu debit Anda dengan logo GPN. Kartu debit dengan logo GBN dapat dipesan secara reguler di setiap bank dan dapat diambil selama 14 hari setelah penggantian rekening atau pembukaan rekening baru.

Kapan nasabah dapat memperoleh kartu berlogo GPN?

Sejak tanggal 29 Maret 2018, setiap nasabah bank di Indonesia dapat memperoleh dan menukarkan kartu debit yang berlogo internasional dengan kartu debit berlogo GPN.

Apakah nasabah tetap dapat menggunakan kartu lamanya yang berlogo internasional jika tidak ingin menukarkan dengan kartu berlogo GPN?

Ya, setiap nasabah memiliki hak untuk memilih kartu debitnya sesuai dengan kebutuhannya, baik itu berlogo internasional maupun berlogo GPN.

Apakah kartu GPN dapat digunakan untuk transaksi di luar negeri dan transaksi e-commerce?

Saat ini, kartu yang menggunakan logo GPN hanya berlaku untuk transaksi di dalam negeri, baik untuk transaksi melalu ATM maupun EDC. Jadi, bagi nasabah yang ingin melakukan transaksi di luar negeri masih harus menggunakan kartu berlogo internasional seperti Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB dan lain sebagainya.

Bagaimana nasib kartu yang masih berlogo internasional seperti Visa atau Mastercard dan lain-lain dengan adanya GPN?

Kabar baiknya adalah kartu yang berlogo internasional seperti Visa atau Mastercard masih tetap beredar dan berlaku di Indonesia untuk memenuhi kebutuhan nasabah khususnya pada transaksi luar negeri karena saat ini kartu berlogo GPN baru dapat bisa digunakan untuk transaksi domestik alias transaksi di dalam negeri.

Dengan hadirnya GPN, apakah setiap nasabah harus memiliki 2 kartu, yaitu kartu berlogo GPN dan kartu berlogo internasional?

Tujuan diterbitkannya kartu dengan logo GPN adalah untuk mendukung pembayaran di dalam negeri agar potensi pendapatan negara tidak lagi harus ke luar negeri. Pada dasarnya, bank tidak boleh memaksa nasabah untuk memiliki kartu GPN apabila nasabah tetap ingin memiliki kartu berlogo internsional. Namun, jika nasabah ingin memiliki kartu belogo internasional untuk transaksi di luar negeri dan GPN untuk transaksi di dalam negeri hal tersebut sah-sah saja.

Apakah kartu berlogo GPN dapat menggunakan EDC dari bank-bank lain?

Setiap melakukan transaksi di Indonesia, seluruh kartu debit yang berlogo GPN yang diterbitkan oleh bank di dalam negeri dapat menggunakan EDC dari bank lainnya. Hal ini dikarenakan kartu debit tersebut telah memenuhi pengujian atas interkoneksi dan keamanannya.

Apa saja perbedaan sebelum dan sesudah GPN?

Bagaimana sistem kerja GPN?

Jika dulu setiap penarikan uang tunai di ATM yang tidak menerbitkan kartu debit Anda, Anda akan dikenakan biaya sebesar Rp4.000 dan biaya transfer online sebesar Rp6.500. Dengan adanya GPN, Anda tidak harus lagi mengeluarkan uang untuk transaksi-transaksi tersebut karena seluruh infrastruktur dan sistem telah terhubung dan tidak harus lagi singgah di luar negeri seperti sebelumnya.

Apa saja kelebihan GPN?

• Transaksi melalui mesin EDC yang dahulunya dikenakan biaya sebanyak 2-3% menjadi 1% dari transaksi.
  
• Masyarakat dapat menggunakan kartu ATM dan mesin EDC berlogo GPN untuk melakukan transaksi di semua kanal pembayaran di seluruh Indonesia sehingga mesin ATM dan mesin EDC akan berjejeran di pusat perbelanjaan.
• Nasabah tidak lagi dikenakan biaya oleh merchant ketika melakukan transaksi non-tunai karena telah memperoleh Merchant Discount Rate.
• Merchant tidak perlu menggunakan banyak mesin EDC untuk bisa memproses pembayaran sehingga waktunya lebih efisien.
• Masyarakat tidak perlu lagi membawa uang tunai karena seluruh proses transaksi pembayaran domestik dapat dijalankan dengan interkoneksi (saling terhubung) dan interoperabilitas (saling dapat dioperasikan).
• Pemerintah dapat melaksanakan program Government to Person (G2P) seperti penyaluran bantuan sosial non-tunai atau subsidi secara non-tunai, dan Person to Government (P2G) seperti program elektronifikasi jalan tol dan transportasi secara menyeluruh.
• GPN dapat meningkatkan perlindungan konsumen dengan pengamanan data transaksi nasabah dalam setiap transaksi.
• GPN membantu meningkatkan keuangan inklusif dan mengembangkan sistem perdagangan nasional berbasis teknologi yakni e-commerce.
• Terwujudnya sistem bertansaksi nasional yang aman, efisien dan nyaman sesuai dengan perkembangan teknologi yang dilengkapi dengan fitur keamanan yang berstandar nasional yang dilakukan di dalam negeri melalui jaringan transaksi domestik.
• Menekan anggaran operasional dan investasi teknologi seperti mesin ATM dan mesin EDC sehingga biaya transfer dana, penarikan tunai, dan komisi pembelian yang awalnya dibebankan ke nasabah menjadi berkurang.

 Apa saja kerugian GPN?

• Kartu berlogo GPN belum dapat digunakan untuk transaksi pembayaran di luar negeri, baik melalui mesin ATM maupun mesin EDC.
• Bank dan perusahaan keuangan akan mengalami potensi rugi karena mereka harus mencetak dan menerbitkan kartu berlogo GPN pengganti kartu berlogo Visa atau Mastercard.
• Berkurangnya pendapatan bank dari fee yang awalnya dibebankan ke merchant sebanyak 2-3% menjadi 1%.
• Kartu berlogo GPN belum dapat digunakan untuk pembayaran e-commerce seperti ketika nasabah ingin membeli barang dari luar negeri melalui Ebay, Amazon, Alibaba.
• Kartu berlogo GPN tetap memberlakukan biaya administrasi bulanan seperti kartu berlogo Visa atau Mastercard dan biayanya berbeda tipis sekitar Rp1.000 – 2.000 saja.

Masih dilema? Bijaklah dalam menentukan pilihan

Hadirnya kartu debit berlogo GPN buatan pemerintah Indonesia ini tentulah menawarkan berbagai keuntungan bukan hanya untuk negara tetapi juga masyarakat. Tetapi, perlu juga diingat bahwa kartu debit berlogo internasional seperti Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB dan sebagainya sudah jelas memiliki sistem teknologi yang mutakhir dan mendunia yang memudahkan masyarakat Indonesia ketika ingin bertansaksi di luar negeri. Sebelum Anda menjatuhkan pilihan kartu debit berlogo GPN atau internasional, hendaklah berpikir matang-matang dengan melihat kebutuhan Anda saat ini karena setiap pilihan kartu memiliki kelebihan dan kekurangan. Namun, apabila Anda masih dilemma di antara dua pilihan, sebaiknya Anda memiliki keduanya karena kartu berlogo GPN akan menguntungkan Anda dalam bertransaksi di dalam negeri sedangkan kartu berlogo internasional pun juga akan menguntungkan Anda ketika bertransaksi di luar negeri atau ingin berbelanja online di situs internasional.

Indigenous Australian innovator Julie-ann Lambourne recently visited Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali. There she took part in a series of events and conferences organised by the Australian Embassy in Indonesia.

This visit was part of the celebration of the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week. During this week, Australians celebrate the culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Bali was the final stop of Julie-ann’s tour. There she was one of the speakers at a full-day conference held at Kembali Innovation Hub in Seminyak on July 12. She took this opportunity to share her experiences in social entrepreneurship with local students.

Empowering Indigenous Communities

For years, Julie-ann has worked to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in Australia. A Torres Strait Islander woman herself, descending from Mabiaug and Darnley Island, she aims to help disadvantaged people overcome adversity. She has thus organised many projects aimed at local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

In her experience, these communities all operate on the “man at the top” principle. But even though patriarchy is so prevalent, she noticed a rather curious fact. Namely, the women in these communities are usually doing all the work.

The projects organised by Julie-ann and her colleagues helped give these women a voice and the tools to succeed in life. But it wasn’t just the women that benefited from these projects. “Through the program, a lot of people can start to stand up, starting businesses to raise their life,” Julie-ann said.

Virtual Reality for Equal Opportunity

The event in Bali also included a special workshop for the local women in leadership communities. The workshop focused on creating employment opportunities using virtual reality (VR). As the co-founder and CEO of enVizion Group, Julie-ann knows a lot about this subject.

Her company is one of the most successful businesses in Australia owned by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Aiming to empower other members of the community, they launched a project called Virtual Reality Training Bus. With it, they have given people in remote parts of Northern Australia easy access to vocational training.

As its name suggests, it is an actual bus. It travels to different parts of the country and offers VR training courses in five employment areas. These include agriculture, mining, construction, aquaponics, and health. The goal is to motivate people to overcome barriers and improve their quality of life.

The Importance of Digital Innovation

Julie-ann also places a lot of value in digital innovation. She is the co-founder of D:HIVE, a Cairns-based digital innovation hub. D:HIVE was also one of the topics for the panel discussion held by Digital Innovation for Social Impact on the same day.

The hub aims to secure digital inclusion of people from disadvantaged backgrounds. According to Julie-ann, it provides people with the knowledge and tools they need to run a successful online business. This includes courses on digital literacy, start-ups, and digital online marketing.

Australian Consul, Drew Boekel, welcomed Julie-ann’s efforts. He said that the digital sector is one of the key areas of cooperation between Indonesia and Australia. That’s why the two countries organised the first Indonesia-Australia Digital Forum.

Held in Jakarta earlier this year, the Forum brought together dozens of digital experts from both countries. According to Boekel, Julie-ann’s two-day visit to Indonesia is just as important. That’s because her work shows us that digital technology can help us overcome inequality. This is enough to give hope to millions of people living in disadvantaged communities.
