• Countries around the world have been ringing in the New Year, with huge crowds gathering to watch some of the largest celebrations since the pandemic. In Bali, Indonesia, celebrations included a cultural parade with Balinese dancers performing in traditional dress. (ABC News)
• Minority groups in Indonesia fear the country’s new criminal code will have a devastating impact on some of the country’s most vulnerable people. (ABC News)
• Livestock exports out of Darwin have almost halved this year due to price and biosecurity challenges in the cattle market. With ongoing high cattle prices and limited supply, the shape of the trade with Indonesia has changed. (ABC News)

• Duane Hamacher is an astronomer and associate professor at the University of Melbourne who has specific interest in cultural astronomy and indigenous sciences. His new book, ‘The First Astronomers – How indigenous Elders read the stars’, offers a systematic overview of traditional First Nations knowledge of the stars. In this episode, he talks about the history and value of cultural astronomy and ongoing attempts to discredit indigenous science and knowledge. (Talking Australia)

• The University of Sydney is looking for candidates for a domestic funded PhD scholarship that includes a small budget for field-work to look at coverage and equity in the South East Asia Region including Indonesia. The candidate will have the option to explore interests in migrant border, gender issues and identifying pro-equity strategies to reach under-served populations.
