  • Brisbane, 9 October – AIBC QLD, joined by AIYA QLD, proudly present: “New Paths for Queensland-Indonesia Relationship: Up & Up” – a panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges coming up over the next 24 months, followed by a professional networking opportunity.   • Canberra, 21 June – 27 October – The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) ‘Contemporary Worlds: Indonesia’ is a major exhibition of contemporary Indonesian art showcasing 20 of the most exciting emerging and established artists from Bali and Java’s key artistic centres of Bandung, Yogyakarta and Jakarta.   • Canberra, 19 October – Don’t miss out on PASPAMPRES 2019: “The Struggle for Love” and “Folk Market” – PPIA ANU’s biggest event of the year that combines a classic Indonesian theatrical performance and Indonesian food market, from 2 – 6pm. The event is FREE – registration essential.
  • Canberra, 20 October – Recently hit by flash flooding, AIA ACT are hosting a fundraiser with this year’s AIYEP participants to help a school in Bangga Village, Palu region to get chairs and desks for the students. Don’t miss dance performances by the AIYEP participants, a silent auction and the chance to practice your English/Indonesian. Tickets are $20 – buy one now!

  • Darwin, 5 October – Come to ‘Tropical Indo Vibes’ – an Indonesian night market with a bit of a twist, from 4 – 9pm. It will feature a variety of food stalls serving you a numerous traditional delicious indonesian food and live performances; regional cultural performance, historical plays and native dances to spices exhibition.   • Jember, 13 October – Co-hosted by SSEAC, the 4th conference on human rights entitled, ‘Human Rights in Southeast Asia: Theory meets Practice” provides a platform for academics, human rights activists and practitioners to explore current human rights issues in SE Asia.   • Melbourne, 19 October – Susheela Raman’s ‘Ghost Gamelan’ is a fabulous music collaboration from the UK and Indonesia, and part of this year’s Melbourne Festival program.   • Join AIYA ACT! AIYA ACT will have their AGM at ANU Union on 21 October 2019. All positions (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, General Representatives and Social Media Officer) are open for recruitment – please send your expression of interest for positions to [email protected].
  • The Australian Technology Workshop are hosting a series of Professional Development Workshops throughout Indonesia, entitled ‘Finding a PhD Supervisor: A practical guide to researching, preparing and communicating with prospective supervisors”. They will be held in Jakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar and Bandung throughout the month of October. Register now.
  • IndoAustay are running the next Adult Language Immersion Course in Bandung, 6 – 17 January, 2020. The two-week course is taught at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Bandung and is a great way to learn more about Indonesian language and culture.   • The Bali Democracy Students Conference (BDSC) IIII, themed ‘Democracy and Inclusivity’ will be held this year in Nusa Dua, Bali from 5-6 December 2019. It will convene 150 students, both Indonesian and foreign students studying in Indonesia. Learn more about the conference here and apply before 7 October 2019. 
  • The Herb Feith Scholarships scheme is a new initiative of the Monash Herb Feith Indonesian Engagement Centre. Scholarships support graduate researchers to complete an MA or PhD at Monash University on a topic related to Indonesia. Submit your expression of interest for the January – June 2020 enrolment period by 11 October (Domestic Students). Note – The deadline for international students has closed. Find out more here.
  • The University of Western Australia is establishing a node of the Australia-Indonesia Centre (AIC) and wishes to appoint a Postdoctoral Scholar to undertake research related to contemporary Indonesia as part of the broader research efforts of the AIC.   • The University of Sydney are currently accepting applications for a full-time lecturer position in the Department of Indonesian Studies in the School of Languages and Cultures. Applications close 20 October 2019. More info available here.
  • Corethics Ltd are seeking volunteers to assist with their ReelOzInd! Short Film Fest on 30 November 2019.   • The ASEAN Australia Education Dialogue (AAED) 2019 will be held from 18-20 November 2019 in Malaysia and is themed ‘Building Quality Assurance and Sustainability in International Education’. More information on how you can attend can be found on their website.
  • The Asia Centre’s 5th International Conference (to be held in Bangkok, July 2020) will focus on ‘Hate Speech in Asia: Challenges and Solutions. They are now accepting abstracts until 15 December 2019. Submit yours and/or register for the conference here.
  • Pemberdayaan Perempuan Memerangi Kemiskinan (PPMK) is a microfinance organisation based in Yogyakarta that work to empower women to fight poverty. They also provide free English classes to children and are currently working to establish an English book library, so children can continue learning at home.
