In the news
- Australian businesses are unpersuaded by President Joko Widodo’s plans to reopen the economy for business, with trade slumping and few signs that travel restrictions will be eased any time soon. Dane Herden, owner of the Celebrity Ink Tattoo Bali studio, left the island in March to return to Australia and doesn’t know when he will be able to return and reopen his business. (Sydney Morning Herald)
- Indonesia is warning women not to get pregnant during coronavirus lockdowns, with a senior Government official predicting hundreds of thousands of babies will be born during the pandemic. (ABC)
- A video showing three Indonesian nuns singing a popular Idul Fitri song went viral on Sunday, with social media users expressing their appreciation for the trio’s demonstration of religious acceptance. (The Jakarta Post)
- In the valley between two volcanoes, soldiers fanned out around the cemetery as men with shovels move in to dig up the dead. Trump’s business partner in Indonesia exhumed graves in West Java to build resort. (Washington Post)
- According to legend, when the plague came to the city of Yogyakarta on the Indonesian island of Java, the sultan ordered his citizens to cook sayur lodeh and stay home for 49 days. The plague ended. And so began a practice that continues to this day. (BBC)

- AIYA East Indo Chit Chat, 30 May – AIYA East Indo are back with ‘Chit chat online’, 11am onwards. This week’s theme is ‘superstition’ – join them for the chance to brush up on your English and make some new friends. See their IG for details.

- ‘This crisis is different’, 3 June – Join Professor Iwan Jaya Azis of Cornell University’s webinar where he will discuss the unfolding economic crisis from a global perspective and then focus on the impacts in emerging market economies. It will be chaired by Professor Hal Hill of The Australian National University. Webinar link.

- NAILA Social Media challenge – The National Australia Indonesia Language Award (NAILA) has started their first social media challenge. In 15 seconds or less, tell us what your favourite hobbies are. Post it on instagram and tag @aiya_naila and #NAILAChallenge.

COVID-19 support
- AIYA is providing updates on the status of COVID-19 and its impact on upcoming AIYA events as well as the current status of travel restrictions for Australian and Indonesian citizens. To keep updated, read it here – Bahasa Indonesia and English.
- AIYA is aware that some of our members may be going through difficulties due to the circumstances of the pandemic. Government information including support for international students in Australia and Indonesia is on the website.
- For all foreigners in Indonesia, there is an automatic emergency stay permit extension for all visa types. Foreign nationals who cannot return to their home countries do not need to apply for an extension of their stay permit with the immigration office. This is for foreigners arriving in Indonesia after Feb. 5 2020. More info here.

- Initiated by Airlangga Global Engagement, Airlangga Flatten the Curve Competition (AFCC) 2020 aims to encourage International Students, both in Indonesia and overseas, to contribute to the efforts of containing the spread of Covid-19. International students are expected to contribute with the goal of educating international society using their respective knowledge on the issues. Categories include short video, essay or poster. Submission deadline is 5 June 2020 (11.59 p.m. GMT+7). Read more here.
