Universities have been citing economic pressures due to COVID-19 and the loss of international students. However, these closures are also the result of a lack of federal and state government support for the humanities and for Asian languages. Australian universities stand to lose both important academic and cultural assets with these closures.
In the news
- Study abroad, exchange, and volunteering programs that normally involve travel between Australia and Indonesia have pivoted to online delivery in an effort to continue fostering intercultural competence in young learners, building global citizenship, and deepen bilateral ties. (ASAA)
- In Kalimantan, there are still many remote areas that do not have any phone signal and internet access. Therefore, together with local teachers in SDN Talekoi, Ranu Welum creates SMART VOICE, a tool kit which can be used offline/without internet. (Ranu Welum)
- The latest plan for an Indonesian answer to the Californian tech hub is a sprawling multibillion-dollar, 888 hectare park in West Java. - When Indigenous artist Glenda Nicholls began making fishing nets using the traditional weaving techniques she had learned from her mother, she was told women do not make fish nets. Through her art, Nicholls seeks to preserve those cultural practices. (ABC News)
- Indonesia has asked Australia and Singapore for help in its search for a submarine that went missing during a training exercise with 53 people on board. (SBS News)
