The Indonesian Government’s Darmasiswa Scholarship provides funding for foreign students to study Indonesian language, culture and/or arts at one of a selection of institutions across the archipelago. Back in 2016-2017, AIYA NSW Communications Officer Peter Rothwell took part in the program, studying in Yogyakarta. With applications for the 2020-2021 program now open, Peter shares a reflection of his experience that he penned at the time.

For inspiration, you may wish to read one member’s story of meeting East Javanese punk band, Crucial Response in the 2017 Annual (p.36) or another member’s interview with the Vice President of Balai Bahasa dan Budaya Indonesia Queensland in the 2018 Annual (p.44).
But feel free to get creative! You may even like to expand/update an earlier piece you have written for the AIYA blog. If you’re an AIYA chapter committee member, you’re also welcome to contribute a piece as an individual member (alongside the input from your chapter). Submissions can be in English or Bahasa Indonesia.
The best pieces will be selected for publication in the AIYA Annual, to be released in December 2019.

‘Twas the end of winter in 2012, when two of the AIYA co-founders, Arjuna Dibley and Rachelle Cole, told Katrina Steedman and I about this cool new initiative they were starting. It was an effort to grow people to people links between young Australians and Indonesians and build a network of students and young professionals with an interest in both countries to increase the level of bilateral youth engagement – the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association. A few months later, Kat and I launched the AIYA NSW Chapter, and the rest is history.
The time has come for me to leave AIYA in the safe hands of the next generation. AIYA has been a big part of my life for many years and it has been a very rewarding journey to say the least. Over the years I have met hundreds of incredible people in both countries (including my talented wife(!), Virania Munaf). As President of AIYA NSW, the committee ran AIYA’s first Australia-Indonesia trivia night, film screenings and debate nights, amongst numerous other events from language exchanges to working holiday visa information sessions. Other notable highlights include being a delegate at the inaugural CAUSINDY conference, having a steak with Nicholas Saputra and the AADC2 crew, making an Aus-Indo dangdut track to promote the inaugural NAILA Awards, working with DFAT to launch the educational game app, Next Door Land, completing the new AIYA website, developing the scope of the AIYA Blog and our Member Spotlight series, producing the AIYA Annual publications, and brainstorming over countless committee meetings and planning weekends to keep AIYA on track for a strong and sustainable future whilst running impactful programs and initiatives to benefit the AIYA community.
Fast forward to 2019 and there is certainly a sense of new beginnings in the air. We know who sits on the throne(s) of Westeros, the Avengers have finally defeated Thanos, Virginia Trioli is about to depart ABC Breakfast, the IA-CEPA has been signed, and both Australia and Indonesia are recovering from election fever following the victories of Scomo and Jokowi.
And so we also have a change in leadership here at AIYA National, with the luar biasa Clarice Campbell set to take the reins to launch AIYA forward into the 2020s.
Clarice has been an AIYA fixture since her time in AIYA VIC in 2014. She has lived and breathed the AIYA vision and mission through the years and in her time living and working in Jakarta. In the Operations portfolio at AIYA National, she has helped spearhead the expansion of our Chapter activities to hosting over 300 events each year of all shapes and sizes, involving thousands of participants in both countries annually. She has particularly led the growth of our Indonesian Chapters and has solid existing relationships with AIYA Chapters and partners. The future of AIYA is very aman indeed with Clarice at the helm, and I am very excited to see what AIYA gets up to in the years to come.
Terima kasih sebanyak-banyaknya to all those who have been a part of AIYA over the years and who continue to strive to connect, inform and inspire young Australians and Indonesians. AIYA is fuelled by semangat. Over 150 volunteers across both countries are dedicated to contributing to and strengthening this unique bilateral relationship, one young person at a time. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked through the ups and downs with many luar biasa people over the years. Most importantly, I wish to thank the current AIYA National Executive led by Clarice, Melanie Kilby, Sam Shlansky, Disty Winata and especially Sheila Hie. Sheila and I joined AIYA National at the same time and it has been an honour to work with her diligence and financial nuance behind the scenes and to witness the growth in AIYA activity over time. Last but not least, thanks to Vira for tolerating all the late night teleconferences and email sprees, and to all other partners, spouses, friends and families that support the passion of AIYA volunteers.

Now in its third year of publication, the AIYA Annual 2018 includes messages of support from Australia’s new Ambassador to Indonesia, Gary Quinlan, and Indonesia’s Ambassador to Australia, Kristiarto S. Legowo. It features updates from our twelve amazing chapters, who ran everything from film and cooking nights to careers events and scholarship information sessions. There’s also an update from the 4th annual NAILA initiative and a wrap up of AIYA’s involvement in this year’s AIBC Conference held on the Gold Coast!
Once again, this year’s AIYA Annual includes contributions from individual members. From a large number of submissions, we have selected three of the best pieces for your reading pleasure – a personal account of Dan Trevanion’s enriching experience on the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP), Rachmania Wardhani’s interview with the Vice President of BBBIQ – an organisation dedicated to reinvigorating Indonesian language learning in Queensland and Ilfi Reka Alfi Yarti Syabeh’s account of being a fresh graduate in Indonesia’s increasingly competitive labour market. From 5-8 September, 31 young leaders from Australia and Indonesia gathered in Makassar to exchange ideas about how to strengthen the relationship between our two countries as part of the Conference of Australian and Indonesian Youth (CAUSINDY). This years CAUSINDY theme was “Connected by Sea”, and saw delegates exploring creative ways to improve the bilateral relationship through the maritime sphere.

CAUSINDY began with an introductory session and the delegates exploring some of the cultural and historical sights of Makassar including Fort Rotterdamn and Pantai Losari. This was followed by opening night where Pak Bernadus Djonoputro – Deloitte’s Country Head of the Infrastructure & Capital Projects in Indonesia, shared his thoughts on the Australia- relationship in the sectors of infrastructure and urban planning.
CAUSINDY 2018 included four panel discussions lead by experts in each field on the themes of Politics, Business and Trade, Costal and Environmental Sustainability and Regional Security.
As the kick-off panel, Ima Abdulrahim – Executive Director of The Habibie Center (one of Indonesia’s leading think tanks focusing on democracy and human rights), and Ian Wilson – lecturer at Murdoch University spoke for the Politics Panel Discussion, along with Uni Lubis – Editor in Chief of the IDN Times as the moderator.

This panel provided a review of the progression of domestic politics in Australia and Indonesia over the last year. This panel highlighted the importance promoting inclusive, trustworthy, and positive political participation through community awareness. Following from this discussion, the panel addressed the topic of women’s involvement in politics both in Australia and Indonesia. Overall, this panel recognised the progress that has been made in politics by both countries and concluded with a discussion about the ways gender equality can be improved going into the future.
The second panel discussion was about business and trade and included a dinner hosted by the Australian Consulate-General Makassar. This featured panel Julian Smith – PwC’s Global Transport & Logistics industry leader and director at PwC Indonesia Advisory, Vonnie Opier – the leader of ERP Oracle on Cloud project implementation under Kalla Group, and Noke Kiroyan – Chairman and Chief Consultant at Kiroyan Partners as the speakers and Uni Lubis as moderator.
The panel explored the recent announcement of the IA-CEPA and discussed what the agreement will mean for business and trade going forth including the future challenges business in both countries will face. Richard Mathews, the Australian Consul-General in Makassar also remarked about the importance recognising social responsibility in international development.

In line with this years “Connected by Sea” theme, day three kicked off with a panel addressing costal and environmental sustainability. The panel featured Rili Djohani – Co-founder and Executive Director of the Coral Triangle Center (CTC), Prof Jamaluddin Jompa – Chairman of Center of Excellent on Marine Resilience & Sustainable Development (MaRSAVE) at Universitas Hasanuddin, and Simon Baldwin – Director of SecondMuse, along with Lia Zakiyyah from the Indonesian President’s Special Envoy on Climate Change as moderator. This panel examined the dangers of coral bleaching, overfishing, climate change and pollution and the threats these issues pose to Australia and Indonesia.
Overall, the panel discussed potential solutions to environmental issues through cooperation and sustainable practices. In particular, Rili Djohani discussed the importance of awareness, engagement and education on ocean issues. Overall the panel concluded that these issues cannot be solved at an individual level – we must work together to create action to manage environmental sustainability issues.

The final panel for CAUSINDY 2018, on regional security featured Dr. Grey Raymond – Research Fellow in the Strategic & Defence Studies Centre at Australian National University, editor of Security Challenges journal, and Asia Pacific Security series editor for ANU Press, Prof. Philips Vermonte – the Executive Director of Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Jakarta as the speakers, and Natalie Sambhi – Research Fellow at the Perth USAsia Centre, as moderator.
The speakers provided insights on regional security including the role of China, non-traditional security threats, the rise of Islamic State Militants and the return of foreign fighters. Overall, the panel discussed the importance of maritime space and the ways in which non-traditional threats are affecting the security of Indonesia and Australia.
Another core program of CAUSINDY this year is Engaging Future Leaders (EFL). This program involved Indonesian students engaging in.a language exchange program with Australian and Indonesian delegates, with the aim to promote cross-cultural understanding between Australia and Indonesia. This year, EFL was held at the Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS) and involved 7 local schools. The students and CAUSINDY delegates worked in groups to produce a flag that best represented the bilateral relationship between Australia and Indonesia, through pictures and drawings to symbolise the relationship between the two countries.

Following on, one of the most important parts of CAUSINDY is the annual CAUSINDY Review, in which delegates work closely with an expert mentors to examine an issue in the Australia-Indonesia relationship. This years mentors included Elena Williams – a higher education consultant who served as the Resident Director of ACICIS, Dr. Lily Yulianti Farid – writer and founder of Makassar International Writers Festival, Aron Corbett – Diplomat at the Australian Consulate-General in Makassar, Mariam Kartikatresni – Director of Indonesian Development at UTS Insearch, and Fendi Liem – Indonesian Clean Energy entrepreneur.
Throughout the Review sessions, each group developed a creative solution to the issue they had identified with the aim to help strengthen the Australia-Indonesia relationship. To wrap up the final day of CAUSINDY 2018, the delegates pitch their CAUSINDY Review projects to panel of mentors, who then provided feedback towards the project.

Finally, CAUSINDY 2018 wrapped up with a Gala Dinner to reflect on the conference. Australian Consul-General, Richard Matthews, spoke about the positive role CAUSINDY is playing in the strengthening of Australia-Indonesia relations. Delegates have left Makassar with a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges for Australia and Indonesia throughout the maritime sector and a new appreciation of the history and future of Australia’s economic and cultural engagement with Eastern Indonesia.

After the success of ReelOzInd! Australia Indonesia Short Film Competition and Festival in 2016and 2017, we are very excited to announce its return again in 2018.

Over the past two years ReelOzInd! has attracted hundreds of entries from both nations, with screenings for live audiences in dozens of cities in Australia and Indonesia. We’ve reached thousands more online with viewers given the opportunity to vote for their favourites to select the People’s Choice Award.
ReelOzInd! was established by the Australia-Indonesia Centre in 2016 to encourage Australians and Indonesians to share their stories. We are unique. There is no other festival that brings Australian and Indonesian film makers together to share their work and stories on the same screen.
One of our awarded filmmakers, Dery Prananda, from Yogyakarta (Director/Producer, ‘Amelis’ [Best Film 2016] & Director/Co-producer ‘Arohuai’ [Co-Best Film 2017]), reflected on the impact ReeOzInd! has had on his career so far.
“ReelOzInd changed my life. For me, ReelOzInd is like home where you can develop yourself. From there, I had many extraordinary opportunities related to filmmaking. Besides my film being screened in many places in Indonesia and Australia, the most important thing is meeting with many people and opening new possibilities in the future.”
For Blair Harris from Melbourne (Director, ‘Dog and Robot’, Winner Best Animation, 2016), the competition and festival similarly opened up new opportunities for him as a filmmaker and introduced him to some great Indonesian stories.
“Seeing all the great work from Indonesian filmmakers and also collaboration entries alongside my film Dog and Robot up on the big screen at ACMI was amazing. I even got to speak on a panel with the producer of The Matrix, one of my favourite films.”
This year the theme for our competition is YOUTH/ PEMUDA.
In ReelOzInd! 2018 is seeking documentary, fiction and animation short films of up 10 minutes duration, incorporating this years’ theme within the story narrative, or as a visual element in the film.
Awards will be given for Best Film, Best Documentary, Best Animation, Best Fiction and special awards for Best Youth Film (created by a filmmaker 13-18 years old) and Best Collaboration between Australian and Indonesian filmmakers.
Our jury of high-profile Australians and Indonesians from the film industry will be back again to select the best films in each category. These will be screened across Australia and Indonesia from September to December 2018 in our pop-up and travelling festival (bioskop keliling).
A new initiative for ReelOzInd! 2018: ULTRA SHORTS
This year we are also very excited to announce a new companion competition Ultra Shorts. Ultra Shorts are films of up to 30 seconds in duration, to be shared and voted for on our social media platforms. It’s a fresh way to open up filmmaking to younger and emerging creatives, or just anyone with a camera phone and a great idea!
A wonderful feature of ReelOzInd! in 2017 and continuing in 2018 is our open invitation to schools, universities, community groups and film enthusiasts in general to host a pop-up festival screening of their own. In 2017 we loved sharing photos and reports from these events with our community through social media and our website.

On behalf of AIYA National, I would like to extend a warm thank you to all those who have followed and supported AIYA’s activities throughout 2017.
2017 was the milestone fifth year of operations for AIYA, the peak non-government youth body that aims to connect, inform and inspire young Australians and Indonesians, and to create, facilitate and stimulate opportunities for increased bilateral youth engagement.
We have now grown to a massive team of over 120 volunteers across both countries! It is a privilege to lead this passionate and talented group of young people who are fuelled by semangat. We’re all dedicated to the growth and development of the organisation and we recognise and value the role that AIYA plays in the Australia-Indonesia space.
