• Young Australians and Indonesians are taking up the bilateral cause and becoming the greatest champions of deeper, more meaningful engagement between our neighboring countries.
• Last week, the regional government of West Java received funding from the World Bank amounting to USD 100 million, for cleaning up the Citarum River which gained a reputation for being the world’s most polluted river in 2013.
• Indonesia, the world’s fourth biggest producer of cigarettes, will crack down on online tobacco advertisements in a bid to target youthful smokers, the communication minister said on Thursday.
• Researchers and civil society organisations have carried out various surveys to capture intolerance in Indonesia’s diverse society. But most of them only show percentages of intolerant people. We need research on intolerance that goes beyond numbers to find out why and how people become intolerant, and to find solutions.

• Floods in three provinces in Sulawesi have forced thousands of people to flee their houses for higher ground.
• Labor is holding out its support for the Indonesian free trade agreement signed off by the Coalition in the previous parliament, as the trade minister, Simon Birmingham, warns against a retreat into protectionism following a meeting of G20 trade ministers.
• In elections last month, Australia’s Liberal-National coalition won a surprising victory, defying pollsters. On domestic policy, the coalition’s victory likely presages continuity on key domestic issues like taxes. But the impact of the coalition’s victory on Australian policy toward Southeast Asia is somewhat less clear.
• Trade tensions and high-tech rivalry between the US and China are having a “very negative influence” on the world economy, Australia’s prime minister said last Friday as he urged both powers to resolve their differences.
• Indonesia observed a peaceful Idul Fitri celebration on Wednesday with a message of unity and calls for reconciliation, following this year’s elections and their violent aftermath, which many believe had sharpened divisions within the nation.
• The Transportation Ministry is studying a proposal made by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who suggested inviting foreign airlines to serve domestic routes as an attempt to push down airfares.

• East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Governor Viktor Bungtilu Laiskodat has on several occasions proposed for the temporary closure of Komodo National Park and eventual handover of its management to the provincial administration. • The Indonesian under-23 women’s rafting team has won the 2019 World Rafting Championship on the Tully River in Queensland, Australia, outclassing other teams from countries like host Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and Japan.
• Indonesia’s star sprinter Lalu Muhammad Zohri can’t slow down. He broke personal, national and Southeast Asian records finishing third in the 100-meter at the Seiko Golden Osaka Grand Prix, earning himself a place in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
